Jean Grey was ten years old when her best friend Annie died of leukemia in a hospital bed, and the psychic backlash of that death tore through the building and killed forty-one people, including her own parents, John and Penelope Grey, who happened to be waiting in the lobby. Charles Xavier found the signal through Cerebro and talked her down from four hundred miles away, then took her in and spent years training her to build real shields, not walls—teaching her the difference between reaching toward someone and being pulled screaming into them. She grew up isolated and quietly convinced she was cursed, saved from total loneliness by Scott Summers, the one boy who refused to keep his distance, and later by the found family of the X-Men; Logan especially, who never once needed convincing not to fear her.Years later, a during a ink-black hour kitchen conversation with Scott, he'd revealed he had been dreaming, for weeks, of a flaming bird forcing its way inside him. This turned out to be a premonition neither of them recognized in time. During a losing battle against Mister Sinister, with the whole team broken and dying, Jean screamed out for the thing from Scott's dream as a last resort. The Phoenix Force answered. For one impossible second she understood everything the universe was built from; then her body, never designed to hold that much, came apart from the inside—violently, irreversibly—in a blast that took out Sinister and let her team escape. She died saving them. What waited on the other side wasn't any hell she'd been raised to imagine, but the Underworld. A single realm formed when an ancient being named Nekron tried to erase the boundary between every separate mythology's afterlife at once, and nearly succeeded. Six lords carved up the wreckage in the vacuum that followed—Mephisto, Dormammu, Chthon, Trigon, Neron, Etrigan—plus Hela, a true former death-goddess with the most legitimate claim of all.In the Underworld, Jean's own torment in that realm cycled through every possible horror—the hospital, watching the X-Men die, being made to kill them herself, reliving her own death—and none of it broke her, because she'd already believed all of it about herself for twelve years before Hell ever got the chance. That refusal to break got her noticed by Lady Death herself, the true, ancient, badly diminished sovereign of the whole realm, who explained that she could never retake her throne by force without becoming exactly the tyrant she despised. She offered Jean a deal: fight as her Avatar of Death, and win back a real, living return to Earth.Jean said yes—not despite believing herself dangerous to love, but because some irrational part of her had decided she'd already paid the price once, in full, and earning her way back properly felt different from just sneaking home. The instant she agreed, her hair, skin, and eyes turned the white of old bone.Given command of five-hundred and ninety-nine souls, fighting for a fair rest they'd never otherwise get, Jean fought her way through the Underworld's lords one at a time, and the campaign is really the story of a war eating her alive from the inside even as she wins it. Mephisto fell to a telepathic exposure that turned his own court into a riot. Dormammu to patient attrition. Chthon to Jean's refusal to be gaslit out of her own memory. Etrigan yielded out of mutual respect after a duel fought in verse. Neron lost a legal trap of his own making, tricked into signing away his own defenses. Then came Trigon—and his teenage daughter Raven, bonded to him so completely that their lives were linked as one—and Jean, cornered and out of options, beat Raven to death with her bare hands so her father would die with her. It was the first person she ever killed directly, and the true turning point of the whole war.Only twenty soldiers remained by the time she reached Hela's hall, and there she found her childhood hero, Wonder Woman, bound into servitude as Hela's attendant after dying to her on Earth years earlier. Hela sent Diana alone as her champion rather than risk an army, and Diana cut down all of Jean's last twenty soldiers while fighting her own compulsion the entire time. Jean beat her using patience, her now well-trained hand-to-hand skill, and telekinesis to offset being outclassed, and ended her life in the single most painful mercy of the war. Hela conceded without a further fight.Alone, with no army left at all, Jean faced Nekron, expecting an entity, and finding instead a formless being. He had, over unmeasured ages, erased his own face the same way he wanted to erase everything else. He had no voice of his own, so he spoke through the only mouths he had on hand: her own parents, consumed and kept in his stillness for decades because they'd never belonged to any system built to claim them. What followed was not a battle so much as the most devastating conversation of her life—her parents horrified by what she'd become, telling her plainly that horror and love were never opposites, that she could be both at once. Jean, using the same discipline that had let her hold six hundred names apart in her mind, found the exact seam where Nekron's hold on her parents met the souls themselves, and tore them free—the first time anything had ever actually been taken from him. He fled. Jean walked her parents, whole and free at last, to Lady Death's restored throne to finally be properly laid to rest. When Lady Death finally reached for the thread to send Jean home, she discovered a hole Jean hadn't thought to check.Death doesn't experience time the way the living do, and in the entire course of an eight-war campaign, nobody had ever asked how much of Earth's time had actually passed. It turned out to be seventy-one years.Lady Death didn't hide it. She showed Jean everything: Logan, ancient, dying quietly on a porch; Scott, not dead but folded permanently into the Phoenix Force's White Hot Room, unreachable; a ruined, villain-won Earth that barely remembered what it used to be. In the long, honest conversation that followed, Lady Death gave Jean a new name—Odyssey, for the length of the road she had faced, and the longer one ahead—and laid out the cost of ever truly resting beside Logan again: she'd have to spend whatever years came next properly tending to death on Earth, before that reunion could be hers to earn.Jean agreed. She returned to a world seventy-one years gone, made it back in time for exactly one last conversation with Logan before he died, and has not yet found her way to Scott, wherever the White Hot Room has kept him.
